Cash is a senior chihuahua between 12 and 14 years old. He came to us in late 2018 when his owner was unexpectedly admitted to the hospital for quad bypass surgery. A family member put out a plea on Facebook, because Cash had been left in the apartment alone and was growling and barking at everyone who tried to remove him from the home. Poor boy was terrified to be without his mamma of 12 years, and he was trying to guard their home. After he was rescued, it did not take long before he began to show his soft and sensitive side! He is neutered, UTD on shots, and recently had a dental cleaning. Vets say he is in top shape for his age, but he does require a prescription food for gastrointestinal health due to a history of gastroenteritis.
After we picked Cash up from the apartment, he had to get over his fear and insecurity of being with new people. He had been with one owner for 12 years, and he was not accustomed to being around others (especially men). However, with patience and understanding, Cash came out of his shell and showed us what a deeply affectionate boy he is. Although originally the plan was for Cash to be fostered until his owner recovered, it eventually became clear that she would no longer be able to care for Cash in her assisted living home. Now it is time for Cash to move forward and find a new person to love.
Cash has a lot of love to give. His favorite activities are snuggling underneath blankets and rolling around in earthworms! He loves to sit in my lap for scratches and pets. Cash is blind due to cataracts, but he gets around well once he knows the layout (just be careful, because he will fall off the couch!). He loves to go for walks, and he gets super excited when he hears the sound of his leash! He is intimidated by larger dogs, ignores cats, and likes other small dogs on a case by case basis. So long as other small dogs ignore him, he also ignores them. However, if the other dog is energetic and “in his face” he will defend himself. He would do best in a “low key” home where the other pets are laid back, or where there are no other pets. Cash has not been around children and finds them a bit loud for his old man preferences, he would do best in a home with only adults. Cash has many years of love left to give, and is looking for a warm lap to rest in. Won’t you give a little old man a chance?
